How to nest a DXF file with GoNesting
Step 1 · Upload Files
Drop in one or more ASCII DXF files, up to 20 MB each. Every file is split into separate parts, each with its holes.
Step 2 · Import Parts
Tick the parts to nest, set how many of each, and give a part priority when it should be placed first.
Step 3 · Configure Sheets
Pick one of nine standard sizes or type your own length and width, and set how many sheets of each size the job can use.
Step 4 · Nesting Options
Choose the gap between parts, a margin from the sheet edge and how far parts may turn, from No rotation to AI Smart Rotation.
Step 5 · Run Nesting
Several layouts are packed at once on your computer’s cores while the sheets fill on screen. The best one is kept, and you can stop, adjust and run again.
Step 6 · Export Results
Get a ZIP with one DXF file per sheet, written in cutting order, and a PDF report with a drawing of every sheet. Open the files in your CAM software.
GoNesting is not a CAM suite. It does one job, nesting your DXF parts tightly on your sheets, and hands back files ready for the CAM software you already have.
Every part is packed by its real outline and holes, not by a rectangle drawn around it. Curved, angled and irregular parts sit closer together, and several layouts are tried at once so the best one is kept.

Nesting software arranges the parts from your DXF drawings on your sheets so they use as little material as possible, instead of you placing them by hand in CAD. A tighter layout means fewer sheets per job and less scrap. GoNesting nests every part by its true shape, so curved and irregular parts sit closer together than they would as rectangles.

There is nothing to install. GoNesting runs in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, so it works on Windows, macOS and Linux. The nesting itself runs on your computer’s processor cores, so a computer with more cores finishes large jobs sooner.
DXF files saved in ASCII (text) format, up to 20 MB each, and you can upload several at once. DWG, SVG, PDF and binary DXF files are not supported. If your drawing is a DWG, open it in your CAD program and save or export it as an ASCII DXF first.
Most often an outline is not closed. Pieces whose ends meet within 0.5 mm are joined into one outline, but a bigger gap means the shape cannot become a part. Also check that the drawing is 1:1 in millimetres, that holes are drawn inside their part, and that sheet borders and title blocks are removed, because they would be read as parts too. Text and dimensions are ignored.
Yes. Each file is split into separate parts, each with its own holes, so a drawing of a whole product works as well as one file per part. You then choose which parts to nest and set a quantity for each part, or one quantity for every part in a file.
It depends on how many parts there are, how detailed their outlines are and how many rotation angles you allow. The 188-part sheet at the top of this page took 8 seconds on a 6-core desktop computer, while a job with very detailed outlines can take a couple of minutes. You can watch the sheets fill and stop a run at any time.
The result screen tells you how many parts could not be fitted. You can export the parts that did fit, or add another sheet, allow more turning or reduce the gap and run again. On the free plan, running again uses another nesting run.
It depends on your parts, gap and sheet sizes. The mixed 188-part sheet at the top of this page used 86.9% of its material with a 1 mm gap. In our own tests on real DXF files, results ranged from 29.7% on a very open ornamental part to 90.6% on near-rectangular plates. Material used is the part area minus cut-outs, divided by the sheet area.
Yes. Enter the offcut’s length and width as a custom sheet size, and parts are nested on it like on any other sheet. Offcuts are treated as rectangles, so measure the largest clean rectangle you can cut from.
No. GoNesting nests your parts and exports standard DXF files, one per sheet, already in cutting order. It does not write G-code: open the DXF files in the CAM or machine software you use today to add kerf compensation, lead-ins and machine settings, as you would with any drawing.
An account is for one person, signed in on one device at a time. If you sign in on another computer while the first is still signed in, you can sign out there and continue on the new one. A session left idle for 15 minutes frees the account on its own.
